There is still time to participate in the fifth annual Asher’s Walk for a Cure, which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22 and benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Initiated by Carla Grant, the walk seeks to honor Danissa Mudd Lewis and her son, Asher, the latter of whom was diagnosed with leukemia at a young age.
Danissa Mudd Lewis was later diagnosed with pancreatic and liver cancer, Grant said. She lost her battle on April 24, 2013.
Asher is now cancer-free and will be in attendance at his name-sake walk, Asher’s Walk for a Cure, this year, Grant said.
This year’s walk will be held in the Grayson County High School gym on Oct. 22 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“Although Asher did not go to St. Jude’s during his battle, St. Jude’s research most likely helped with his treatment,” said Grant. “Why? Because St. Jude shares all their research with doctors and hospitals across the world. Any donation you give to St. Jude will help all children! No child with cancer is denied treatment at St. Jude, ever!”
As part of the event organizers’ fundraising efforts, limited edition Asher’s Walk for a Cure t-shirts are being sold at $15 a piece. Sizes range from youth small to adult XL at that price; add $1 each, up to 4XL, Grant said.
The last day to order a t-shirt will be Wednesday, Oct. 12.
Participants in Asher’s Walk for a Cure will be asked to collect donations. Participants do not have to walk, even if they have signed up.
Each person who raises $80 will receive a St. Jude t-shirt, Grant said.
“Anyone who wants to join the day of the walk can, even if you have not become a participant before that day,” said Grant. “All are welcome!”
So far, Asher’s Walk for a Cure has raised around $15,000 for St. Jude, and Grant is hoping to raise at least $7,000 this year.
Additionally, craft and vendor booths will be set up, and spaces remain for vendors interested in participating. A silent auction will also be held on Oct. 22 to raise money for St. Jude.
