The Leitchfield Police Department has offered several tips for local individuals to protect themselves from falling victim to theft, particularly thefts of and from vehicles.

First and foremost, citizens are advised to always lock their vehicles and homes when leaving them.

Additionally, citizens should never leave their vehicles running, and never leave car keys inside their vehicles, according to Leitchfield Police Department Detective Kevin Smith.

Citizens should also not leave valuables inside their vehicles.

“If you do have to leave valuables in your car, cover them or keep them out of sight,” Smith said.

Citizens should also write down serial numbers for their belongings, especially guns. Doing so will allow police to track stolen items if they have been sold.

Taking photographs of belongings assists with the recovery of stolen items, as well.

To report a theft or submit information relating to any other criminal activity to the Leitchfield Police Department, call 270-259-3850 or visit www.leitchfieldpolice.org and click “Contact.”
