The coming holiday weekend is bound to go off with a bang as Independence Day celebrations ring out across the county.
The area’s largest Fourth of July event, Rumble Over Rough River, will take place on Saturday, July 4, above the beach area at Rough River Dam State Resort Park.
This annual gathering near the state park’s lodge features a top-notch fireworks display at dusk. The fireworks display can be viewed from land or from your boat.
Leading up to the main event, visitors can enjoy music, a variety of food and other vendors, as well as fishing, swimming, boating, beach volleyball and other lake activities.
The event is free to the public.
Volunteer group Friends of Rough River Lake call the event, “one of the best in the state of Kentucky,” and remind visitors that the annual fireworks display is completely funded by tax-deductible donations.
Another annual Independence Day event is the Knights of Columbus’ fireworks display in Peonia. This event will continue the group’s long-standing tradition this year with a fireworks show on Friday evening.
In addition to a great fireworks show, there will be karaoke and other entertainment in the Knight’s Hall.
Locals can fill out the rest of their weekend with a free concert event on the back patio of Rough River Dam State Resort Park’s lodge.
Part of the free Concert in the Park series, which offers free live music every Friday night from June 5 through Sept. 4, the holiday weekend event will feature local musician Emily Portman.
Portman will provide entertainment from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m.
Also on Friday, will be the Pirate Plunge event at the Leitchfield Aquatic Center.
Visitors who come dressed in family-friendly pirate costumes will get a discount on admission to the water park, and everyone who stops by will have the chance to enjoy boat races and a treasure hunt where everyone walks away with a prize.
