Strong winds during a mid-afternoon storm ripped the front facing off of the Leitchfield AutoZone on Friday, June 26.

Winds reportedly came through and blew the front layer of bricks off of the business, located at 627B South Main St., causing the bricks to fall forward on five vehicles parked outside, AutoZone Commercial Sales Manager Billy Prewitt said.

When the incident took place at around 2:30 p.m., Prewitt said he heard a “big bang” and led everyone inside the store into the bathroom for shelter from the storm and any further damages.

No one was injured during the incident, and no one was inside any of the vehicles at the time, said Prewitt, adding that a crew would be coming in on Saturday, June 27 to survey the damages to the building.

“I’m just glad nobody got hurt,” he said.

Three of the damaged vehicles, a 2015 Ford Fiesta, a 2014 Ford Fiesta, and a 2012 Chevrolet Colorado, belonged to AutoZone, Prewitt said.

The other two vehicles, a 1997 Dodge 4×4 and a white Chevrolet Impala, were owned by customers of AutoZone.
