Two members of the Sew Much More Quilters Guild recently took home prizes at A Mountain Quiltfest in Pigeon Forge, TN.
Dixie Franklin, of Sew Much More, said the local Quilters Guild entered 14 quilts from the Clarkson area in the competition at A Mountain Quiltfest about two weeks before the show was held (March 15-19).
“The competition is stiff because you get entries from all over the U.S.,” Franklin said.
Nancy Cain, of Clarkson, took home the Third Place ribbon in the “Large Quilted by Another” category for Charming Bowties, which Cain made and Mary Yoder quilted.
And Sarepta Phillippi, of Leitchfield, took home the Third Place ribbon in the “Large Hand Quilted” category for Whole Cloth, every stitch of which was put in by hand, according to Franklin.
“Both came home with Third places, which was excellent,” said Franklin. “This is a big accomplishment for these girls.”
Franklin said quilts used to serve more of a utility purpose—to keep people warm—but now they are viewed as more of an art form.
“We always say, ‘A blanket warms the body, but a quilt warms the soul,’” said Franklin.
The Sew Much More Quilters Guild holds monthly meetings on the first Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m. at Sew Much More, located at 120 West Main St. in Clarkson. These meetings are open to anyone interested in attending.
