LCA changing name, class offerings

Leitchfield Christian Academy announced this week that, as of this fall, it will change its name and no longer offer 1st through 5th grade classes.

In an interview with The Grayson County News-Gazette, Leitchfield Christian Academy (LCA) Principal Linda Gentry said the school will continue to offer preschool and kindergarten classes and is working to help ease elementary school-aged students’ transition to other schools.

“Numbers are not such that it’s feasible to maintain 1st through 5th grades,” Gentry said.

As of the 2016-2017 school year, which will begin around Aug. 8 or 9, LCA will change its name to First Baptist Preschool and Kindergarten, according to Gentry.

“It was not a decision that was made easily,” said Gentry, adding that several months of prayer and looking at numbers went into the decision-making process.

Letters detailing the change have already been sent to the parents of LCA students, as well as the First Baptist Church congregation.

First Baptist Preschool and Kindergarten will continue to operate in the same building, located at 106 East Walnut St. in Leitchfield.

Presently, LCA offers two 3-year-old classes, two 4-year-old classes, and one kindergarten class, and, Gentry said, these classes are expected to continue next year.

LCA’s roots go back to 1968 when First Baptist Church took over Ella Wortham Kindergarten, renaming it Ella Wortham Memorial Kindergarten.

Then in 1976, a 4-year-old preschool program was added, and, in 1979, a 3-year-old preschool program was added.

These preschool and kindergarten programs were half-day programs, but, in 1992, the school established an afternoon daycare program, as well.

1998 saw the official establishment of Leitchfield Christian Academy with the addition of 1st grade to the school’s list of programs.

Gentry said the original intention was to add one grade level per year, but at some point, all elementary, middle, and high school grades were added.

LCA stopped offering middle and high school classes three years ago.

Registration packets for the 2016-2017 school year can be picked up at the LCA school office. For more information, call the school at 270-259-4076, ext. 2, or visit
