On Jan. 16, 19 GCMS students earned chairs in the KMEA 4th District All-District Band.
To earn spots in the band, students had to be one of the best among hundreds of students in the area, which includes 18 schools in Breckinridge, Grayson, Green, Hardin, Hart, Larue, Marion, Meade, Taylor, and Washington Counties.
At the auditions, held at Elizabethtown H.S., students performed scales, played prepared excerpts, and sight-read. The highest scoring students from these auditions earned “chairs” in the All-District Bands.
Making the band were Devin Coon, Reuben Elmore, Jeremiah Embry, Abigail Geary, Jacob Green, Alexis Harman, Rylie Hayes, Trevor Kincheloe, Sophia McCleod, Isaac Milliner A.J. Napper, Mason Parker, Brooke Parkhill, Riley Penny, Shaina Portman, Ethan Priddy, Natasha Ramsey, Kennadi Walters, and Matthew Woosley.
“These students should be praised for their efforts,” said Director Gary Parker. “Achieving at this level requires many hours of home practice. We’re really excited for our students, and we’re excited about the reputation that we’ve established. Our students are taking pride in knowing that they’re part of a winning organization. And this goes on to the next level with the H.S. band. Hopefully these students realize they are the cream of the crop, and they want to keep that going at the H.S.”
“We’re very proud of this showing, especially with so much great competition in our district,” said Director Ashley Bell. The students put in a lot of time on this before and after school. They deserve the great honor of All-District. The learning they experience [in] All-District Band will help make our own band stronger.”
The All-District Band Concert will be held at 2:00 p.m. CST on Saturday, Feb. 20, at the Meade Co. H.S. auditorium in Brandenburg, KY. The public is invited to attend. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.
