The Leitchfield Police Department (LPD) announced the addition of two new officers last week.
According to LPD Assistant Chief of Police David Riley, new officers Brandon Rafferty and DJ Newton are scheduled to attend the police academy from March through September 2016.
Prior to their attending the academy, Rafferty and Newton will ride and train with other LPD officers, learn the department’s policies and procedures, and become familiar with city streets, among other activities, Riley said.
“They seem to be two fine, well-rounded young men,” said Riley, of Rafferty and Newton. “We’re glad to have them on the department and think they’ll be an asset to the community.”
The addition of Brandon Rafferty, the son of Kentucky State Trooper Scott Rafferty, and Newton, who has earned his Bachelor’s Degree, increases the LPD’s manpower to 18 officers, including Riley and Chief of Police Kevin Henderson.
With the recent hires, the LPD has seen a three-officer increase to its staff from the time Henderson took over as Chief, according to Riley.
“The department really needed the manpower,” said Riley, explaining that, with a larger police force, the LPD can have more officers on patrol per shift, and, consequently, more opportunities to serve the city.
“The department is getting back to the numbers, and the manpower increase will help us serve the community better,” Riley said.
