Local law enforcement teamed up this past Saturday, Dec. 19 to make the season brighter for 38 needy Grayson County children through the annual Shop with a Cop program.
Officers and deputies from the Leitchfield Police Department (LPD), Grayson County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO), and Grayson County Detention Center, as well as numerous volunteers took 38 children—ranging in age from 8 months to 16 years—to Walmart to visit with Santa Claus and shop for necessities and toys.
This year’s Shop with a Cop benefitted 15 more local children than last year, and after shopping was completed, officers and deputies took the children out to eat at Rough River Pizza Company, which provided free meals for the children and discounted meals for law enforcement and volunteers.
The money raised for this year’s Shop with a Cop totaled around $6,000 and consisted of a $2,500 donation from Walmart, a $1,000 donation from local business T and T Construction, $500 from the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, and numerous other businesses and individuals who made donations ranging from $20 and $300.
“The GCSO would like to thank those who donated and called the office to volunteer their time to help shop for needy families,” Grayson County Sheriff Norman Chaffins wrote in a press release. “Grayson County has always stepped up during the Christmas season to ensure that [the] less fortunate are not forgotten.”
