Hughes named a Singletary Scholar

GCHS Class of 2015 graduate Jessica Hughes has been selected as a Singletary Scholar by the University of Kentucky.

The Singletary Scholarship, named for former UK President Otis A. Singletary, has been awarded since 1985 and is the most prestigious academic scholarship awarded by the university. This year only 300 of the nearly 3,000 applicants were selected for personal interviews. Of those, only 50 were selected for the honor.

The award provides undergraduate tuition, room and board, stipend, iPad, and a one-time $2,000 summer abroad stipend. Singletary Scholars are automatically enrolled in the UK Honors Program. They also enjoy the special community-building experience of developing and executing service work.

Hughes, the GCHS valedictorian, gave credit to her experiences with DECA, noting its emphasis on community service and presentation skills, along with the leadership abilities she developed as an officer. She has also been a member of the GCHS Academic team, National Honors Society and her church youth group. She plans to major in education.

Jessica Hughes is the daughter of Greg and Laura Hughes, of Leitchfield.
