Furniture Program accepting donations

The Grayson County Alliance Furniture Program is seeking to clarify how it operates, as well as express thanks for the community’s support over the years.

“The Grayson County Alliance Furniture Program wishes to thank all those people who have donated furniture and appliances over the years,” said Alliance Representative Laura Witten in a news release. “Without you, this program would be impossible to maintain.”

The Furniture Program benefits local residents in need of furniture or appliances whom are income eligible, with the exception of fire victims, whom the program always supports.

Any time Grayson Countians have usable furniture or working appliances that they do not need or want, the Furniture Program will take them.

The Furniture Program accepts sofas, love-seats, living room chairs, kitchen tables and chairs, beds, chests of drawers, dressers, and working appliances.

Since furniture cannot be left outside in the unpredictable weather, an appointment with a Furniture Program volunteer is needed in order to drop off a donation.

To set up an appointment, call the Grayson County Alliance Food Pantry at 270-259-4000, and the message will go to the Furniture Program volunteers so schedules can be coordinated.

If donors are unable to make an appointment, donations may be picked up on Thursdays. A volunteer will receive the donations and give a tax receipt for donors’ records.

Witten said there are a number of items that the Furniture Program cannot take, however. These items are as follows:

1. Baby beds. (These must be manufactured a certain way due to safety regulations.)

2. Bathroom fixtures or kitchen items that are built-in. (The majority of the clients of the Furniture Program rent houses or apartments, and those items would not be suitable for them.)

3. Hospital beds.

4. King-sized beds.

5. Gas appliances.

“Keep these things in mind when wanting to make a donation, and please call if you are unsure,” Witten said. “Again, thank you so much for your past support, and we look forward to serving Grayson County for a long time to come.”

The Grayson County Alliance is located at 2203 Brandenburg Rd. in Leitchfield.
