Veterans Memorial opening pushed back

The completion date for American Legion Post 81 Veterans Memorial Park has officially been moved to May 2016, and its dedication will coincide with the annual Grayson County Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony, held in Leitchfield.

At a recent Veterans Memorial Committee meeting, it was decided that because of wet weather over the past several weeks, which delayed excavation for the project, as well as the required lead time to order items necessary for the park’s completion, extending the completion date to May 2016 “was more realistic,” according to a news release from the Grayson County Chamber of Commerce.

In light of this development, the committee has also decided to extend the deadline for the general public’s purchase of commemorative pavers, at the price of $250.00, until Veterans Day 2015 (Nov. 11).

A majority of the funding for the proposed memorial comes from the purchase of commemorative 8” x 8” brick pavers engraved in recognition of family members, friends, and/or co-workers who have served in the various branches of the United States armed forces.

The original deadline for the purchase of pavers at their current price was set for June 1. After the extended Veterans’ Day deadline, commemorative pavers can still be purchased but at a higher price.

The committee also discussed recognizing those who have expressed an interest in providing financial support to the project beyond the purchase of pavers.

Committee members noted there is considerable interest within the community for this project and agreed that special recognition should be given to anyone making a significant financial donation to its completion, according to the news release.

To accomplish this, the committee members agreed to recognize four levels of contributions for this special recognition:

1) Platinum Donors, for those giving $10,000 or more.

2) Golden Givers, for those giving at least $5,000 or more.

3) Silver Supporters, for those giving at least $2,500 or more.

4) Bronze Benefactors, for those giving at least a $1,000 or more.

In return for this generous financial support of the memorial, the names of these individuals, businesses, and civic organizations will be engraved on the back of the large, marble memorial stone, which will be a focal point of the memorial.

Letters will be distributed throughout the county by the committee over the next several weeks to inform people of funding opportunities and also extend invitations to those who may be interested in participating.

Additional information about the project is available at Leitchfield City Hall, the Centre on Main, American Legion Post 81, and the Grayson County Chamber of Commerce. Donations may be made at these locations, as well.

American Legion Post 81 Veterans Memorial Park is to be located in Leitchfield’s James D. Beville City Park.
