Prior to packing up for the season, summer residents of a Nolin Lake community came together to donate their leftover, non-perishable food items to the Grayson County Alliance Food Pantry last month.
“Earlier this year, I got a call from one of our weekend summer lake residents,” said Grayson County Alliance President Melissa Williams. “Dawn Douthat wanted to know about giving to the Grayson County Alliance Food Pantry.”
Douthat asked Williams if, when the lake residents in her Nolin Lake community packed up for the season, they could donate their non-perishable pantry items to the Food Pantry rather than taking them back home.
Williams said she thought Douthat’s idea was “wonderful.”
“She contacted her neighbors, and we delivered a collection barrel to one resident’s front porch,” Williams said. “As the visitors packed up after Labor Day, they brought their goods to the barrel.”
“A lot of people are donating, and we truly hope the effort is the spark that starts a fire around the lake for other communities to give back to Grayson County,” Douthat said.
Additionally, some of the lake residents also donated beds to the Grayson County Alliance Furniture Program.
“We are incredibly grateful to our summertime neighbors for wanting to help the people here,” said Williams.
