The official opening date for American Legion Post 81 Veterans Memorial Park has been set for Memorial Day 2016.
The park, to be located across from Leitchfield Aquatic Center on East Carroll Gibson Boulevard, will have its official grand opening at 10 a.m. on Memorial Day, according to American Legion Post 81 Commander Shane Thomason.
With the opening set, the park planning committee is gearing up to campaign for the purchase of memorial pavers for local veterans. The cost of the pavers helps fund the construction of American Legion Post 81 Veterans Memorial Park.
“When I was working at the Centre [on Main] during the Memorial Day service, hearing about the local veterans who paid the ultimate sacrifice was emotional for me,” said Joyce Mudd, a member of the veterans memorial park committee.
Mudd, whose husband was a Marine and whose son now serves in active duty military, said she was “humbled” to have the opportunity to help coordinate the park project.
“It’s going to be beautiful,” Mudd said of the park.
“To us…this is something that should have been done a long time ago,” said Thomason.
So far, a total of around 300 8”x8” pavers have been sold, and there will be room for a total of 2,500 memorial pavers. The pavers cost $250 each, and a replica may be purchased for an additional $50.
While there is no deadline for pavers to be purchased, and the cost of pavers will never increase, Thomason said, loved ones wishing to purchase a memorial paver for their veterans are encouraged to do so by Veterans Day 2015 (Wednesday, Nov. 11) if they wish to have them on display by the park’s opening on Memorial Day.
Additionally, individuals with multiple veterans in their family whom they wish to memorialize with pavers can request to have them placed together at American Legion Post 81 Veterans Memorial Park, provided they are purchased together, according to Leitchfield Tourism Director Ilsa Johnson.
For organizations, businesses, or individuals who wish to make larger donations to the project, tiers have been created based on range of donations, and a monument, on which the donors’ names will be inscribed, will be erected at American Legion Post 81 Veterans Memorial Park.
The contribution tiers are as follows:
Platinum Donors: $10,000
Golden Givers: $5,000
Silver Supporters: $2,500
Bronze Benefactors: $1,000
