What to review before selecting a Medicare part D

By Gay Fulkerson, MD

What do I need to review before selecting a Medicare part D during the enrollment period October-December 2015?

Before selecting any insurance, make sure the insurance will cover the medications that you are currently taking. Please don’t pick an insurance and then hope that your medications are covered or that your provider can get them preauthorized.

For all insurance plans, read the fine print and know what is covered and what is not covered. It is the patient’s responsibility to know his or her co-pays, deductibles, in-network providers, hospitals, and labs. Ask the insurance and make sure the provider, hospital and lab that you to wish to use are in network. Don’t purchase the insurance and then try to get your provider, hospital or lab to be in the network. It most likely will not happen.

You are responsible for paying all co-pays and deductibles at the time of service before your insurance will pay anything. Be diligent before you select your insurance policy.
