The Cougar tennis teams traveled to the Lexington area last weekend to take part in several matches against area teams, and the Lady Cougars also took part in a tournament at Asbury University.
On Friday, the men’s and women’s teams squared off at Lexington Lafayette for mainly eight-point matches. The women came away with an 8-1 victory, but the men fell 6-3.
On Saturday, the men played at West Jessamine, while the women competed in the Asbury University Women’s High School Tournament, where they faced teams from Sayre School, Taylor County, Villa Madonna and West Jessamine..
The Cougars won their match at West Jessamine 7-2. While no official standings were put up in the tournament, the Lady Cougars fared very well. Due to a couple of teams dropping out earlier, the Lady Cougars sent their JV squad as a second entry. Each team had two singles players and two doubles teams.
In the number-one singles draw, Grace Gorby won her first match 6-1, 7-6 (6-3) over Emily Ingram, from West Jessamine. In the semi-final round, she faced the defending state champion, Madeline Rolph, from Sayre School, and was defeated 0-6, 0-6.
That put Gorby in the third-place match against Sarah Krems, from Villa Madonna. Gorby easily won that match 6-1, 6-0 to finish third.
Senior Katie Beeler was the other singles player. She lost her first-round match to Krems 3-6, 1-6, putting her onto the consolation side of the bracket. She had a bye in the semi-final round, then lost to Ingram in the consolation final 3-6, 4-6.
In doubles, the team of Rachael Woosley and Katie Hayes went all the way out to win the doubles crown. After a first-round bye, Hayes and Woosley defeated Hall and Headly, from Sayre School, 6-1, 6-1 to put the in the final. There they defeated the team of Johnson and Richardson, from Taylor County 6-1, 6-3.
The other doubles team of Raven Shelton and Brooklyn Williams went to the consolation side after losing a close opening match 3-6, 6-7 (5-7) to Johnson and Richardson. After a bye, the Grayson County pair were defeated 3-6, 6-7 by Villa Madonna’s Desmarias and Nester.
In B-team action, senior Taylor Higdon won the consolation bracket. After dropping her first match to Villa Madonna’s Olivia Nester, she defeated Taylor County’s Nena Taylor 7-6 (7-6), 6-1 to take the consolation title.
Eighth-grader Bailey Decker had a bye into the semi-final round where she lost to West Jessamine’s Sydney Sampson 2-6, 2-6. That put her into the third-place match, where she lost to Nester 4-6, 4-6.
The doubles teams had a great showing, finishing second and third. Mackenzie Yeiser and Courtney Vincent teamed for a pair of wins, 6-0, 6-1 over Villa Madonna’s Pahlevani & Krems, and 6-2, 6-4 over Taylor and Canada of Taylor County.
That put them into the championship game against Farmer & Manella, of Sayre School, where they were defeated 0-6, 1-6 for a second -place finish.
The team of Cayman Williams and Kerragan Collard had a bye in the first round, then lost 0-6, 0-6 to the eventual champions, Farmer & Manella.
That put them into the third-place match, where they defeated Taylor and Canada in a marathon match, 7-6, 4-6, 10-7.
