For the second consecutive year, the Grayson County Middle School Cheerleaders closed a successful competition season with a trip to nationals.
On Saturday, Feb. 8, the GCMS Cheer Team competed in the UCA National Cheerleading Championship at the ESPN World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida.
“While they did not make the finals, they represented Grayson County and Kentucky well,” said Co-GCMS Cheerleading Coach Tina Poindexter. “The kids were wonderful. They worked hard.”
The GCMS Cheerleaders’ “biggest accomplishment” came when they were named 3rd Runner-Up in the state of Kentucky, said Poindexter.
Co-GCMS Cheerleading Coach Ginny Paine said of the state competition, “It’s like the Sweet-16 of our sport.”
The state-level middle school cheerleading competition, held this year on Saturday, Jan. 11, started just two years ago, and both years, the GCMS Cheerleaders made the finals.
“I’m glad they started having a competition like this,” Poindexter said. “It gets [the middle school cheerleaders] ready for high school competition.”
The GCMS Cheerleaders also won 1st place out of three teams in their division and Overall Grand Champion at the Extreme Classic in Park City on Saturday, Feb. 1.
“We’re really proud of these kids, and the support from the community has been unbelievable,” Paine said.
Poindexter, echoing Paine’s sentiment, said “Without community support, we couldn’t do this.”
