The Cougar varsity basketball team earned its first win in spectacular fashion Saturday evening in Harned as Tanner Tyra’s buzzer-beating three-pointer gave them a 68-66 win over the host Breckinridge County Tigers.
In the first game of the evening, Breckinridge County led from start to finish as they beat the JV Cougars 44-35.
This was a tight game from the outset, with Breckinridge County holding the lead for most of the first half. The Tigers led 17-13 after the first period and led by five points, 32-27 at the half.
When Breck opened the third quarter with a 13-9 run that increased their lead to nine points, 45-36 with 3:33 left in the period, it looked as though the Cougars were going down to their fourth straight loss to open the season, but they turned things around.
A Tyra three at the 2:44 mark ignited a 12-0 rally closing out the period that saw the Cougars take a three-point lead, 48-45, heading into the fourth quarter.
When Gage Akridge opened the fourth period with a three-pointer, the Cougars had scored 15 straight points and held their largest lead of the game, six points at 51-45.
A three-point play by Breck’s Cody Mingus pulled the Tigers to within a point of the lead, 59-58 with 4:23 left to play, then a 15-footer from Chris Morgan at the 2:50 mark put them back in front 60-59.
A Colton Williams free throw and an Alex Shellhart lay-up put the Cougars back on top 62-60 with 2:00 remaining, but Morgam tied it again with 1:18 left on a lay-up.
The Tigers then hit 3-of-4 at the line to take a three-point lead, 65-62 with 53 seconds left to play. Gage Akridge answered with a three-pointer from the corner and the game was tied once more, 65-65 with 20.9 second remaining.
Luke Loughran was fouled and went to the line in the double bonus with 12.9 seconds left with the chance to put the Tigers back on top. He hit the first, but missed the second.
Gage Akridge rebounded the miss and got it to Talon Gary, who brought it up the court. With the seconds ticking away, Gary hit a wide-open Tyra just outside the arc to the left of the key. Tyra put up the shot and it fell cleanly through the net as the red light in the back-board flashed and the buzzer went off.
The Tigers put four players into double figures, led by Morgan who had a game-high 24 points. Loughran and Benjamin Miller both scored 14 points, while Mingus added 11.
The Cougars put three in double figures, led by Gage Akridge’s 15 points. Gary finished with 14 and Tyra added 12.
Shellhart scored nine, Cole Akridge and Logan Ramsey both had six, and Williams finished with four. Senior Bret Johnston scored two points and led the Cougars on the boards with six rebounds.
The Tigers opened the game scoring the first six points and they never allowed the Cougars to get in front the rest of the way. Breck led 10-5 after the first quarter and led by nine, 26-17 at the half.
A three-point play from Alex Shellhart at the 5:02 mark of the third quarter made it a six-point game, 26-20, but the Cougars would never be closer.
Shellhart led all scorers with 16 points and made it a double-double night with 10 rebounds. He also led the team with four steals.
Zac Williams scored nine points and added five rebounds, two assists and three steals. Logan Ramsey scored five points, while Tristan Willis and Bailey Logsdon had three each to complete the scoring.
