Culinary skills net national honors

December 13, 2013

GCHS juniors Jo Tratar and Madison Willis have each received a $5,000 scholarship to Sullivan University with their national 2nd place finish at FCCLA competition in Omaha, NE.

The event was one of three National Cluster Meetings with nine competitive events each. Willis competed in Culinary Food Art, Tratar in Culinary Knife Skills. In addition to demonstrating skill levels, students were also required to take a timed test on general FCCLA knowledge.

Also during the conference, the girls participated in Leadership Academy, a set of rigorous college-type courses that they will complete and receive credit for in San Antonio next summer. All GCHS FCCLA officers are participating in the Academy.

Willis and Tratar plan to join forces next spring, competing at the state and, hopefully, national level on the advanced culinary arts team. Madison was last year’s Region 5 Vice President of STAR Events and Jo is current Region 5 Vice President of Parliamentary Law.
