2013 Christmas Parade cancelled

The annual Grayson County Hometown Christmas Parade has been officially cancelled for this year.

The parade - put on by the Grayson County Chamber of Commerce on the first Saturday in December - was originally scheduled for Saturday, December 4 but due to poor weather conditions was cancelled, said Chamber Director Becky Escue.

“There was just no way to have it last weekend,” she said.

A number of reasons influenced the Chamber’s decision to finally cancel this year’s parade all together, but the deciding factor was the timing of the Leitchfield Police Department’s Shop with a Cop program and Leitchfield Fire Department’s Shop with a Firefighter program, both of which will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Dec. 14, Escue said.

Given the number of Leitchfield police officers who have committed to attending the Shop with a Cop program, there will be too few available officers to provide the necessary crowd control for the parade, she said.

“[Shop with a Cop] is where they need to be,” Escue said. “We were not going to ask them to make a decision [about whether to cancel it].”

Through the Shop with a Cop and Shop with a Firefighter programs, Leitchfield police officers and firefighters will take a number of local needy children to Walmart to purchase items the children will need for school, such as clothing, said Leitchfield Chief of Police Kevin Henderson in a previous interview.

Following the trip to Walmart, the LPD and LFD will then take the children out to eat lunch, Henderson said.
