A Grayson County Middle School teacher was arrested on Tuesday, May 15 and charged with multiple offenses regarding an inappropriate relationship with a student.

GCMS 6th Grade Language Arts Teacher John W. Cariel, 65, of Leitchfield, has been charged with Distribution of Obscene Matter to Minors, 1st Offense; Sexual Abuse, 1st Degree; Sodomy, 2nd Degree; and Prohibited Use of Electronic Communication System to Procure Minor: Sex Offenses, according to Leitchfield Police Department (LPD) Detective Kevin Smith.

The incidents leading up to the charges allegedly occurred in October of 2017, Smith wrote in a press release.

Cariel was transported to the Grayson County Detention Center without incident.

According to Cariel's arrest citation, a copy of which was obtained by the Grayson County News-Gazette, School Resource Officer Ian Renfrow, on Friday, May 11, received a report of allegations concerning a sexual encounter between Cariel and a juvenile under the age of 14.

Through investigation, it was found that the offender was employed at GCMS as a 6th grade teacher, and the victim was known to be a student at the same school at the time of the offense, the citation states.

It was found that the offender made initial contact with the victim via a social media-like application using his cellular device and allegedly sent photographs of his exposed genitalia to the juvenile victim via this application, the citation states.

The citation goes on to state that a physical sexual act was performed in the parking lot of a business in Caneyville around October of 2017.

According to the citation, Cariel was interviewed at the LPD on May 15, where he waived his Miranda Rights and confessed to the above allegations.

The investigation is ongoing and further charges may be pending, Smith said.

Grayson County Schools Superintendent Doug Robinson issued the following statement regarding Cariel's arrest:

A student tip to a School Resource Officer alleging inappropriate student contact has led to the arrest of Grayson County Middle School teacher John Cariel. The alleged contact took place through technology in the fall of 2017 and off school premises.

I am sickened and dismayed. Teachers are placed in a position of supreme trust. Students and their families should always have confidence in that. We realize that trust within our own system has now been broken due to the actions of a few.

Grayson County Schools will not tolerate even a suggestion of improper behavior or contact between teachers and students. Any allegations will be handed over immediately to law enforcement for investigation. If verified, they will lead to arrest, prosecution, and termination from both the district and the Education Professional Standards Board to ensure these individuals can never again work with children.
